Top 5 Tips to Successfully Avoid Writing
Last fall I made a grand proclamation: “I am going to write a novel this year!”
I had a couple of ideas I had been playing with for a while, although unfortunately they didn’t come to me in a dream, so I wasn’t expecting Twilight. I had a year stretched out so far ahead I couldn’t see the end, even with my glasses on.
All I needed to do was start. It turned out to be an absolutely brutal winter and I was forced to spend lots of time indoors – with Netflix as it turned out. An aside, I’m quite convinced that the lessons I learned from Breaking Bad and Nip Tuck will help me out of a jam at some point. I now know never to use hydrofluoric acid to dissolve a body in a bathtub.
It’s not that I accomplished nothing over the ridiculously long winter (yes, that’s a Game of Thrones reference), but I certainly didn’t kill it. Thinking back, I figure I spent much of my time avoiding writing by creatively implementing the following:
Internet – includes ‘research’, shopping, corresponding, etc.
Reading – predominantly fiction...umm, I mean more ‘research’?
Housecleaning – amazing how clean my house is & the laundry is pretty much always done.
Netflix – I need to binge watch series if I’m going to stay current.
Errands – doesn’t matter if it can wait or not.
After a stunning 8 months of snow (it didn’t actually snow the whole time but at least once every month), spring finally sprung and with it, my commitment to finish my novel. I’m also committing to continuing to work out because we all need to be ready for the impending zombie apocalypse – that’s what I learned from The Walking Dead.
New proclamation: While I still need to do most things on the list, I am no longer going to let myself do them INSTEAD of writing.
PS If anyone needs help with anything, just ask & I’ll add it to my errand list. Also, book recommendations are always appreciated.
